I felt the eye needed a lower lash line too, so I carried on with the white mascara. Not sure if I applied too much, so I'll put the quilt on my design wall for a while to squint at it.
A question I ask myself regularly is why I sew, when painting would be so much quicker? I guess there are several reasons, and this is one of them: I love the way light plays on a quilted/stitched surface. It makes me happy.

Jag kände att ögat också behövde en nedre fransrad så jag fortsatte med den vita mascaran. Är inte säker på om jag satte på för mycket, så jag nålar upp kvilten på min designvägg en stund så att jag kan glira på den.

To create the tapered eyelashes I worked with stranded embroidery floss. First I used five strands of black, then three strands of white, then two, and at the very end a single strand of white.
För att få ögonfransarna att smalna av använde jag delat moulinegarn. Jag började med 5 trådar svart, sedan tre trådar vitt, sedan två trådar och till slut en tråd vitt.

Eye lashes grow out at a speed of 1-6 months. These are faster though: only 30 minutes per lash...

En fråga jag ställer mig titt som tätt är varför jag syr när det skulle gå så mycket snabbare att måla? Det finns förstås flera orsaker, och det här är en av dem: jag älskar det sätt ljuset leker med en kviltad/broderad yta. Det gör mig lycklig.

A parallel concept in this quilt is the eye as a camera. In that analogy the pupil is the aperture and the iris is the aperture stop that controls the amount of light that is admitted into the camera/eye. I'm stitching lines in the iris that represent the moving parts of the aperture stop and muscles of the iris.
Ett parallell tanke i den här kvilten är ögat som kamera. I den analogin är pupillen bländaröppningen och irisen bländaren som kontrollerar hur mycket ljus som kommer in i kameran/ögat. Jag syr linjer som ska representera de rörliga delarna i bländaren och irismusklerna.

What is a black hole? Read on if you want to know! A black hole is an area in space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape it. It has a boundary called the event horizon and anything that crosses this boundary will disappear into the black hole and never be seen again. The strong gravity of the black hole will pull anything (dust, gas, light) within its reach towards it into what is called an accretion disk, where matter and light spins around in a fiery maelstrom until gobbled up by the black hole, if it crosses the event horizon. Also, the gravity of the black hole is so strong that it bends the light from the accretion disk, which creates the illusion that the farther side of the disk bends around the upper and lower part of the black hole. If we were to observe the accretion disk from the side, like I’ve chosen to show it in this quilt, we would thus not only see the disk from the side as a thin line, but simultaneously also see the top and bottom planes of the farther side of the accretion disk, bent around the black hole. There is also a certain point just outside the event horizon where light may actually escape from the black hole in the nick of time. This area, the photon sphere, is represented by the thin white ring inside the accretion disk.
Vad är ett svart hål? Läs vidare om du vill veta! Ett svart hål är ett område i rymden där gravitationen är så stark att inte ens ljus kan undkomma det. Det har ett gränsområde som kallas händelsehorisonten och allt som korsar den gränsen försvinner in i det svarta hålet och kommer aldrig mera att synas till. Det svarta hålets starka gravitation drar allt (damm, gaser, ljus) i dess närhet till sig i en ackretionsskiva, där materia och ljus snurrar runt i en het malström tills det slukas av det svarta hålet, om det korsar händelsehorisonten. Det svarta hålets gravitation är också så stark att den böjer ljuset från ackretionsskivan, vilket skapar illusionen av att skivans bakre del böjer sig runt den övre och undre delen av hålet. Om vi kunde observera ackretionsskivan från sidan, så som jag har valt att visa den i den här kvilten, skulle vi alltså inte bara se skivan från sidan som en tunn linje, utan samtidigt även det övre och undre planet av skivans bortre del, böjda runt det svarta hålet. Det finns också ett särskilt område precis utanför händelsehorisonten där ljus faktiskt kan undkomma det svarta hålet i sista stund. Detta område, fotonringen, representeras av den tunna vita ringen innanför ackretionsskivan.

The grids representing cosmic curvature are finished. I had to scratch my head a few times with it, but I'm very pleased with the result. A grid is normally quite easy to stitch, but in this case the grid lines are curved and the spaces twisted. I wanted a precise and mathematical impression, so I drew the grids exactly as I wanted them and then I had to come up with a method to transfer the lines to the quilt. I didn't want to use a making tool as I wanted to avoid any marks/residue remaining on the white fabric. The method I came up with was to use freezer paper. I transferred the lines to the paper, cut it into strips, making sure to leave an edge that held the strips together. Then I ironed the paper in place, removed one strip, sewed along the outer edge of the next strip, removed another strip and sewed along the new edge. It worked like a charm! Below are images of the process.
Rutnäten som ska representera krökningarna i kosmos är klara. Jag fick skrapa mig i huvudet flera gånger med dem, men jag är väldigt nöjd med slutresultatet. Ett rutnät är ju normalt rätt lätt att sy,men den här gången kurvar sig linjerna och mellanrummen vrider sig. Jag ville skapa ett precist och matematiskt intryck, så jag ritade rutnäten exakt som jag ville ha dem. Sedan var jag tvungen att hitta på ett sätt att föra över linjerna till kvilten. Jag ville inte använda ett markeringsverktyg eftersom jag ville unvika att det blev märken eller rester kvar på det vita tyget. Den metod som jag klurade ut var att använda köttpapper. Jag ritade linjerna på pappret och klippte det i remsor, men såg till att lämna en kant som höll ihop remsorna. Sedan strök jag fast pappret på kvilten, tog bort en remsa, sydde längs kanten på nästa remsa, tog bort en till remsa och sydde längs nästa kant. Det gick som smort! Bilderna beskriver processen.

What about a green grid? I'm auditioning the idea with a paper mask, and I think I'll go for it. Yeah.
Hur skulle det vara med ett grönt rutnät? Jag testar idén med en pappersmask och jag tror faktiskt att jag ska satsa på det här.

The Einstein Field Equations, which describe the spacetime curvature and lead to the prediction of black holes, will form the basis of the machine quilting.

The quilt top is ready for thread work. It was quite difficult to decide which part of the space fabric I would pick for the iris, but in the end it was one tiny detail that decided the matter: the little peacock feather spot/eye to the lower left of the black hole. I fell in love with it. 😄 Time to start thinking about quilting.
Framsidan är nu redo för sömnad. Det var rätt svårt att välja vilken bit av rymdtyget som jag skulle välja till irisen, men i slutändan var det en pytteliten detalj som avgjorde saken: den lilla färgfläcken som påminner om en påfågelsfjäder ("ögat") nere på vänster sida om det svarta hålet. Jag blev så förtjust i den. 😄 Nu är det dags att börja fundera på kviltningen

I've been spinning around the event horizon of this black hole for a few days, and now I've reached the point of no return.
Jag har snurrat runt händelsehorisonten för det här svarta hålet några dagar, men nu har jag nått det ställe där det inte längre finns någon återvändo.
Black Hole: today's progress. I've used a freezer paper stencil to print the pupil, and permanent pens to transfer the design lines as well as draw in the eye lashes on the white foundation fabric. I've also roughly cut out the applique pieces for the deep space behind the eye.
Svart hål: dagens framsteg. Jag har använt en köttpapperschablon för att trycka pupillen och permanenta pennor för att överföra designlinjerna och rita in ögonfransarna på det vita bottentyget. Jag har också grovt klippt ut applikationerna till djuprymden bakom ögat.

I've been working on the image of a black hole and by now I have a design I'm really pleased with. Here it is in two different versions. I don't know yet exactly how I'm going to translate it into fabric and stitch, but I'm confident I'll find a solution pretty soon.
Jag har jobbat vidare med bilden av ett svart hål och vid det här laget har jag en design jag är riktigt nöjd med. Här är den i två olika versioner. Jag vet inte ännu exakt hur jag ska överföra det här till tyg och stygn, men jag är säker på att jag kommer på en lösning rätt snart.

I made a colour sketch for my next art quilt, Black Hole, to see if I'm pleased with the general direction it's heading in. I am! My first thought was to show the black hole from above with just a fiery ring (the accretion disk) around it, like in the recent photograph of a black hole, but I decided that a view from the side with the accretion disc bent and distorted would be much more interesting and weird. I love all the different symbolic layers that are falling into place in this quilt.
Jag gjorde en färgskiss för nästa konstkvilt, Svart hål, för att se om jag är nöjd med riktningen sådär i allmänhet. Det är jag! Min första tanke var att visa det svarta hålet uppifrån med bara en brinnande ring (ackretionsskivan) runtomkring, lika som i det nyligen publicerade fotot av ett svart hål, men kom fram till att en vy från sidan där skivan är böjd och förvrängd ger ett mycket intressantare och märkligare intryck. Jag älskar alla olika lager av symbolism som faller på plats i den här kvilten.
